Mar 2, 2010 - Queen Victoria had a big family. Philip was far removed from the centre of the family. His parents were dysfunctional and he was poor. She fell for him. So that's it. He lacked the intelligence and steadiness of character that made Prince Albert virtually the assistant monarch. The Queen Mum was far cleverer than the he. Being married to the Queen took him so far and no further. I don't know whether it was worth it for him or her. For us "sense of humour" has frequently been an embarassment.

Mar 5, 2010 - Since intelligence and character are all subjective I can't comment on that. But the fact remains that Prince Philip is Queen Victoria's great great grandchild and also Queen Alexandra and Prince Philips grandfather were brother and sister. So hardly far removed from the family. Not like me!! :-)

Mar 5, 2010 - Not as far removed as you, perhaps, but in the consciousness of George VI and Queen Mary distant. He is usually described as Eli\abeth's third cousin. I am confused by how--all this "removed" business. But I calculate that she is his 5th cousin or his "4th cousin once removed". Mountbatten saw him as a potential husband. Philip assiduously inserted himself, inviting himself to Windsor, etc, sucking up to Queen Elizabeth (wife of GVI). But neither she nor the King were favourably impressed.

Apr 19, 2010 - @mc0558 Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice, was born at Windsor Castle in the presence of Queen Victoria

Apr 19, 2010 - @bn279626 So? Philip's mother was "eccentric" and his father a waistrell. He had two half-sisters who were married to enthusiastic Nazis. He, himself, was a handsome rogue who latched onto "modernization" as a catchword to substitute for thoughtfulness. George VI knew he was totally inadequate but he couldn't say No to his daughters. Fortunately, Elizabeth seems quickly to have recognized his limitations and kept their relationship centered on that.

Jun 8, 2010 - actually, it was his uncle dickie who pushed philip into marrying elizabeth of york. he had high hopes that the royal house would be called the house of mountbatten-windsor. earl mountbatten was a high achiever and a bit of a sneak which the queen mother knew. she did not trust him as far as she could throw him.

Feb 9, 2010 - People forget that Prince Philip was Queen Victorias great great grandson and that Queen Alexandra (wife of Edward VII) was his aunt. He was no stranger to royal circles or the royal household so he knew how it worked.
